Leaving a job in the UAE? Get your experience certificate before your last day, not after you fly home

You spent four years on a Dubai site or in an Abu Dhabi hospital, and your next employer wants proof. If you left without an experience certificate, getting one later from another country can take months, and some companies stop replying once you have gone. A weak or missing certificate could cost you a job offer, or leave your Gulf years looking like a gap. This guide explains what a UAE experience certificate is, what it should say, when to ask for it, and how employers abroad actually use it.
What an experience certificate in the UAE is
In the UAE, the document that confirms you worked for a company is usually called an experience certificate, an experience letter or a certificate of service. The names are often used for the same thing: a signed letter from the employer that states who you are, what job you did and when you did it.
UAE labour law expects employers to give a worker a certificate of service at the end of employment, free of charge. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) sets the rules for private sector workers, and the UAE government portal on jobs and employment is the official place to check them. Companies registered in some free zones follow their own free zone employment rules, so if you worked in a free zone, check what your free zone says as well.
An experience certificate is different from a salary certificate (used for bank loans, rentals and visas while you are still employed) and from a reference letter, which gives an opinion of your work. If you are unsure which one an employer abroad wants, the post on service letters versus reference letters explains the difference.
What a strong UAE experience certificate should include
A certificate that only says "Mr X was employed here" is easy to doubt. The details below make it useful to a new employer, a recruiter or an assessing body abroad.
The essentials
- Company letterhead with the full legal company name, address, phone number and a general company email.
- Your full name exactly as in your passport, plus your passport number if you are comfortable sharing it with the reader.
- Your job title, and every title if you were promoted, each with its own dates.
- Start and end dates written in full ("14 March 2021 to 30 September 2025").
- Full-time or part-time, and hours per week if you will use it for a skills assessment.
- Main duties: four to eight lines that describe the work you actually did.
- The signer's name, position and signature, and the company stamp if the company uses one.
Example of duty lines
Example (fictional worker, Joseph Okafor, HVAC technician):
Installed and commissioned split and ducted air-conditioning units in residential towers. Diagnosed and repaired faults on chillers and fan coil units. Carried out planned maintenance for commercial clients and completed service reports. Supervised two helpers on site.
Duties like these help an employer match your work to their role. The post on why an experience letter's format matters for jobs abroad goes further on layout.
When and how to ask for it
The best time to ask is before you finish, while your manager and the HR team still know you and your access card still works. Once you have left the country, a request is just one more email in someone's inbox.
- Ask in writing during your notice period. Email HR and your line manager, say which document you need and why, and give your last working day.
- Send a draft of your duties. HR teams often have a short template. Offering a list of your real duties makes it easier for them to write a fuller letter.
- Check every detail before you sign off. Your name spelling, job titles, dates and the signer's details. A wrong date is far easier to fix in the office than from abroad.
- Ask for an Arabic and English version if the company uses Arabic. If you only receive Arabic, you may need a certified translation later, depending on who reads it.
- Keep the original and several scans. Save a clear colour PDF, not a phone photo at an angle.
- Ask what attestation the receiving country needs. Some employers or authorities abroad ask for documents to be attested. Ask them what they need before you leave, because attestation is easier to arrange while you are still in the UAE.
Sample request email
Example: Dear Ms Rahman, my last working day is 30 September. Could HR please issue my experience certificate on company letterhead, showing my job titles, dates of employment and main duties? I have attached a short list of my duties to help. I will be applying for jobs overseas, so an English version would be very helpful. Thank you, Joseph Okafor.
How employers abroad use your UAE experience certificate
A new employer in Australia, New Zealand, the UK or Canada will usually treat the certificate as one piece of evidence, not the whole story. Expect them to do some or all of the following.
- Match the dates to your CV. A CV that says 2019 to 2025 and a certificate that says 2021 to 2025 raises questions straight away.
- Look up the company. They may check that the company exists and that the phone number and email on the letterhead belong to it.
- Contact the signer. Some will call or email to confirm the letter is genuine and the person who signed it held that role.
- Read the duties against the job. For trades and health roles, the duties may matter as much as the dates.
- Ask for supporting records. Payslips, salary transfer statements, your employment contract or an old staff ID can all back up the certificate.
None of this means they think you are lying. A certificate from another country is hard to check from a desk, so employers look for several pieces of evidence that tell the same story.
When the certificate is missing, thin or refused
The company has closed
If the company has shut down, a certificate may be impossible to get. Gather what you have instead: your contract, payslips, bank statements showing salary credits, your old visa pages and a reference from a former manager who now works elsewhere. The post on proving employment when the company has closed lists other options.
The letter only gives dates
Many HR teams will only confirm your name, job title and dates. Add a separate reference from your supervisor that describes your duties, and keep both together. The post on which documents really prove your work history shows how to build a small evidence pack.
The employer refuses or will not reply
Keep your requests polite and in writing, with dates. If you believe the company is not meeting its obligations, the official UAE government channels explain how private sector workers can raise a labour complaint. For free zone jobs, contact the free zone authority.
Putting the certificate where employers can see it
A certificate in your email folder only helps when someone asks for it. On Talent Tabloid, you can add each role to your profile and request verification; a role is confirmed by the person you nominate or through document review. The Talent Tabloid team can review documents such as service letters, contracts and pay slips with the financial figures redacted. Email confirmation requests are paused at the moment, so document review is the working route and there is no fixed turnaround. ID documents you upload stay private and are not shown on your public profile. The page for skilled migrants explains how this helps when you apply from abroad, and the help centre FAQ answers common verification questions. When you are ready, create your verified profile.
Quick checklist before you leave the UAE
- Experience certificate on letterhead, signed, with every job title and full dates
- Main duties listed, not just your name and dates
- English version, or a plan for a certified translation
- Attestation requirements checked with the receiving employer or authority
- Contract, payslips and salary statements saved as clear PDFs
- Personal contact details of a manager who can confirm your work later
Frequently asked questions
Is an experience certificate the same as a salary certificate in the UAE?
No. A salary certificate confirms your current pay while you are employed. An experience certificate confirms your job title, dates and duties, usually when you leave.
Can I get an experience certificate after I leave the UAE?
Often yes, by email to HR, but it is usually slower and harder. Ask before your last day if you can.
Does my experience certificate need to show my salary?
Not for most employers abroad. Dates, job titles and duties matter more. Only share salary details when the reader really needs them.
What if my job title on the certificate differs from my CV?
Use the certificate's title on your CV, and add a short line describing the work if the official title does not explain it.
